Marvin
Healthy Dining Out at Marvin by Lance Breger
If you live in the Tri-State Area and don't know that the U Street Corridor (U st. & 15th on down) is the hot and upcoming area in D.C., now you know! The newest attraction to this neighborhood is the restaurant, bar, and lounge - Marvin, named after the international musical superstar Marvin Gaye. Opened by the owners of 18th Street Lounge and Local 16, this two story night spot hybrid has it all: restaurant with bar, lounge, dj booth, and big urban patio.
This past Saturday I met a client of mine there for dinner and as soon as you walk into the dimly lit first floor restaurant, you can't help but say, 'Let's Get It On'. The energy and vibe is straight out of New York; lively, dirty-chic, and fun. Marvin was busy with 'happenin' drinking and dining 21 to 50 year olds.
When seated the server tells you the inspiration of the food on the menu and restaurant by specifically acknowledging the time period when Marvin Gaye was in Belgium (thus the Belgian Soul Food). They have a big menu, but when Fried Chicken and Waffles is the staple (seriously)...eating healthfully is tough. There 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough' to get me to eat fried chicken and waffles in front of one of my clients, so I ordered Scallops for an appetizer, Halibut as my main course with Asparagus on the side.
I felt like I was walking through a minefield trying to find something healthy, one wrong step and KABOOM. When surrounded with dangerous stuff, I always look for safety at 'home base'... a salad, chicken, or fish dish. Although I had never had it before, the halibut was really good. It was flaky like grilled salmon (but not as fishy) and served with a light sauce, a few grape tomatoes and asparagus. Good to know, was that I was able to order a side of asparagus even though it wasn't on the menu...always ask!
My Marvin experience was better than 'Sexual Healing'! Environment, service, food, drink, music, and decor are the Rhythm for any one's Blues.
