Savor Stoney's
Logan Circle brings together old and new and so does Stoney’s. Steve & Tony shared a vision, made a hybrid of their respective names, and voilá – “Stoney’s”. Thankfully their names were not Frank and Chuck. Originally, located elsewhere in the District, Stoney’s catered to those who walked the thin blue line. But the entire place absconded with the upbeat vibe and made a clean getaway to 1433 P St. in Northwest. An up and coming vibrant neighborhood with an attitude that knows how to give ya a wink and a smile, yet maintains a sense of pride and distinction at this decades old eatery.
Freddy has been top chef for many a year, and the staff are warm and welcoming. One can’t help but feel upbeat at this popular and peppy joint, which offers high-octane chow in a laid-back atmosphere. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Stoney’s mix of hearty and meaty meals have been staples to their diverse menu since day one.
Robust Reuben’s and kosher dogs have as much bark as bite. You too will sing “Achtung baby” as you devour the kielbasa with kraut, which boasts Bavarian pride. The homespun character goes hand in hand with the very delicious and generous portions. We tried a couple of totally knockout appetizers – spinach and artichoke dip served with incredibly tasty bread and the chicken quesadilla, grilled to perfection, would have made Poncho Villa cluck “Arriba”. The “grande” servings will pack on the kilos!
After all of that, we had little room for our entrées, which are un-pretentiously served on old diner-style plates. Stoney’s is not self-conscious about the ‘hood in which it resides. You’ll enjoy delicious pub-grub and share an energetic ambiance that would suit the budget of a sailor on shore leave, without breaking the bank. Speaking of which, the meals, drinks and apps are all within a reasonable range of cost for DC. Lounge around on the weekends and banter with the brunch bunch - from 11a ‘til 3p. Whether knocking back buffalo chicken pizza and washing it down with a pint or grazing on their suitable salads, you’re bound to find something you like.
The friendly atmosphere alone is worth a look-see. Folks from all walks of life feast within the walls of this comfy, cozy place. From the out of work actor to the semi-hip white-collar type, everyone shared the vibe. No abstract expressionist mentality here. Stoney’s is solidly rooted in fun old-fashioned food and presentation.
Overall rating: A DULEY DO!
