Casa Oaxaca
Healthy Dining Out at Casa Oaxaca by Lance Breger
It's true, if you want to good Mexican food you have to 'run for the border'. The border of Adams Morgan and Dupont Circle, that is. Casa Oaxaca is the new niño on the block of 18th street and I had to check it out for all my amigos. Who thinks Mexican when they think eating healthy? Not I! Let's face it, Mexican restaurants are mostly known for their stiff margaritas, millions of tortilla chips, and talking Chihuahuas, not healthy food. So I thought, I'd see what someone health conscious could order without going loco.
As you enter through Oaxaca's doors you are immediately warmed by deep colors and friendly smiles. This two story boutique restaurant is intimate enough for a date with your favorite senorita, but spicy enough for group gatherings and parties. Dress is casual and comfortable, but no sombreros! There is also a bar downstairs for weekenders that are more about 'living la vida loca'.
When I finally sat down to eat, it was like I broke open the piñata on the first swing! Not only were there excellent choices on the menu, but they served refreshing jimaca (Mexican turnip) instead of the standard stale chips n' salsa. After much thought, I decided to have:
Appetizer - Warm quesillo cheese, caramelized pecans, figs, tomatoes, on a bed of field greens. Dinner - Yellow, green and black mole served over chicken breast. Side Order - Black beans Mexican cuisine is famous for their moles (sauces), so I paired the tres moles chicken with a salad to get some servings of vegetables and a side of black beans for a boost of fiber and protein. The Ensalada de Quesillo y Nuezes Caramelizadas was tasty, but you'll have to pick away a little to keep the calories lower. The tres moles were all delicious and served with a nice portion of chicken, but be careful not to get too sauced.
My dinner at Casa Oaxaca was todo bien, 'all good'. I highly recommend stopping by! Lance's Rating: Muy Sabrosa!
Casa Oaxaca is located at 2106 18th St. NW in Adams Morgan. For more information call 202-387-2272
