Las Canteras
Snugly situated in the midst of Adams Morgan wild and wacky
neighborhood is Las Canteras - a delicious remedy to the Sunday morning
hangover. This sexy eatery seduces with saucy subtlety. It's a classy
masterpiece of understatement…in the good way, a very good way.
The décor is as mellow and engaging as the ambiance, and whispers,
“Peruvian” instead of shouting it. Las Canteras does it right. Look, we
don't need the front end of a Cadillac rammed into a wall to let us
know we should rock and roll in an American-style bistro. And Las
Canteras doesn't need Highland Indians sauntering around the dining
area speaking Aymara to let us know we're in a Peruvian restaurant.
Solid and handsome tables and chairs are comfortable, cozy, and not
cramped. The color scheme is fresh enough for a weekend brunch - and
yet warm and cozy for a romantic dinner on a sultry Saturday evening.
The handcrafted menus got us rolling as we chose brunch… The Pisco bar beckoned, with the out-of the ordinary libations that are not quite breakfast and not quite lunch. …Concoctions
of pure Peruvian pleasure converge with clear grape brandy to create an
array of delicious drinks that will jump-start anyone's day. The
Cherry Piscotini would have made George Washington tell a lie to get a
second round. While the Sour Haas was a lively smoothie with avocado,
pineapple juice and mint, the kick of the pisco will definitely stir
your sleepyhead. We exchanged sips and smiles and tried not to slug
back the deliciousness too quickly. The Sunday morning menu
reflects various regions of Peru with quality - not quantity. White
corn Tamales stuffed with fresh shredded chicken, plump olives, eggs
and spices wrapped in a banana leaf, which would have Harry Belafonte
holler “Day-O”! The Quinoa Pancakes were light, fluffy, and
magnificent, and so full of protein. The above mentioned were
accompanied by scrambled eggs so fresh, it was as though they were
squeezing them out of the free-range hen right onto the skillet. We
cluck you not. The Cebiche: freshly marinated white fish basking
in citrus juices and other exotic spices refreshingly served with sweet
potato and roasted corn kernels to balance the acidity of the dish were
delicious. All of which were beautifully presented. The over all
experience was one we definitely want to repeat. It was truly
satisfying, and a real delight to know the totally mouth-watering
cuisine caters to the more health conscious among us as well as the
carefree carnivore. We highly recommend Las Canteras, 2307 18th St. NW,
202-265-1780.
