Healthy Dining Out at Current by Lance Breger
Current 1215 Connecticut Avenue 202-955-5526
I used to think sushi was only cold and raw, but now sushi is HOT! After my visit to one of the city’s newest, it’s clear that the heat has been cranked up on DC’s dining and nightlife scene. Current Restaurant & Lounge was a sleek, sophisticated, and superb sushi spot off Connecticut Avenue south of Dupont Circle.
Typically the problem people have when going out for sushi is that they will suck down more Sapporo, sake bombs, and sticky rice than something nutritious. At Current you won’t find that, as their 15 year veteran sushi chef and the well balanced menu is there to help keep you on course.
When I have an appetizer, I always think ‘Go Green’. They have a fantastic seaweed salad that was the most colorful and fresh I have ever had! I paired the salad with an order of edamame which is my favorite way to get a boost of soy protein and fiber.
Next I moved to one of Current’s signature sushi rolls, Crunchy Yoshihara. It was made of grilled salmon, avocado, shitake mushrooms, wrapped in warm brown rice. OMG. Not only was it filled with healthy ingredients, but it had an amazing taste and texture. Also, the roll is perfect for both the sushi newbie and oldie.
Current is way more than just sushi, as I finished with the Grilled Hanger Steak Skewers which is served with seasonal vegetables and rice. A big plus for me was that brown rice is always available there. I am not really a steak guy, but these skewers were out of sight. They were very lean and had an incredible flavor.
My experience at Current was everything I could have hoped for: healthy food served with service and style. Make your reservation tonight – to be swept away by this Current!
